👑The Eight Consciousness Kings

đŸ‘ïž Introduction: The Vision and the Eye

At the very beginning of perception, we want to know...

Who am I? What am I?

  • This represents the awakening of the visual sense and the desire to perceive the world. From this initial impulse, the process of self-awareness begins.
  • This class explores the Eight Consciousness Kings—a poetic map of awareness, from the raw senses to the illusion of self and finally to the pure, formless essence within all beings.
  • Below we discover how reality forms through layers of perception, and how suffering arises from clinging to a false sense of self. But more than that, you’ll be shown how to return to your original nature, free and clear, with the heart of a Bodhisattva.

Let’s go!

Eight Consciousnesses – 8 Functions of Consciousness

  • Eye consciousness
  • Ear consciousness
  • Nose consciousness
  • Tongue consciousness
  • Body consciousness
  • Brain consciousness
  • I-consciousness
  • Hidden consciousness

👑 The Heart as King and the Illusion of Suffering

  • The ‘king’ is our heart, the creator of all causation.
  • Observing only through “I and mine” is ego-driven and causes suffering.
  • This loop of ego-observing creates suffering and distorts the heart.
  • Happiness sought through this fake self is unstable and from others.
  • Suffering results from this blind loop. The way out is observing Dharma.
  • Observing Dharma awakens the sixth consciousness to see “I and mine” as false.
  • We are taught to expand our observation beyond self-centric views.

đŸ›„ïž 2. The Method of Dharma Observation

Observing Dharma Procedure:

  • We’re already bound by ego-causation, no need to deepen it.
  • Connect to Dharma for a complete life view.
  • From this view, ego “I and mine” dissolves—return to essence and create a wiser future.

Becoming Dharma Procedure:

  • For awakened beings, the Dharma map is visible in all perception.
  • At this level, knowledge becomes powerful ability.
  • Bodhisattvas use this to help all beings without suffering.

đŸŒ«ïž 3. The Arising of Illusion from Pure Consciousness

The Five Sense Consciousnesses:

  • Eye (vision)
  • Ear (hearing)
  • Nose (smell)
  • Tongue (taste)
  • Body (touch)
  • Called “Blind Possession” — pure perception without judgment.
  • Like infants, we perceive without ego or naming.
  • Subconscious awareness (e.g. healers sensing tension) reflects this stage.
  • Judging arises as senses are used more and knowledge increases.
  • 5 senses act faster than the brain—instinctive, supporting ego.

🧠 The Thinking Mind: Language, Memory, and Time

  • Sixth consciousness arises with language and memory.
  • It processes, labels, and judges perceptions.
  • It creates preferences and supports the ego-self.
  • Memory and language enable the illusion of time.
  • Mind consciousness = thinking, analyzing, judging.

đŸȘžI-Consciousness: Mo Na and the Dream of Self

  • Mo Na creates a fake self—separate from others.
  • This ego-self is a dream, never truly existing.
  • Brings fear, comparison, and suffering.
  • Seventh consciousness = illusion of individuality.
  • Like a wave thinking it’s separate from the ocean—we are always water.

☞ 8 Consciousness: The True Heart Awakens

  • Eighth = Storehouse/Hidden consciousness — true essence.
  • Source of karma and all awareness.
  • Pure form = Buddha nature, formless and limitless.
  • Normally hidden under illusion, but revealed through awakening.
  • Even subconscious influences (like gut bacteria) arise from this depth.
  • Aware essence = aware the wave is just water. No form = no limits.
  • Bodhisattvas see all differences equally—formless consciousness is equal and unlimited.

đŸ—ș Summary and Reflection
